Since the damper itself is physically shorter, you get a lower ride height while still retaining usable suspension travel - instead of running a standard kit with the springs drooped low and the shock riding near fully compressed. Spring rates on Extreme Low kits may be stiffer than the standard equivalent depending on the platform, which can sharpen handling response but may also make bumps a bit harsher.
